Southern Exposure: Karel Prinsloo

Photography
Kenya

In the slums of Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya, a resident waits for customers to pass his kerosene store on the edge of a road expansion project. He may well have had a long wait; at the time the photo was taken (May 2013) the road was in desperate need of repair. The building of the bypass road through Kibera was intended to benefit residents and local businesses, but it has not been without controversy. Some residents lost their homes to make way for the new road.
