Help New Internationalist provide a platform for grassroots voices at the COP21 talks.

In 40 days, world leaders will gather to thrash out a climate deal in Paris. But corporate lobbyists and their media will be there in force to shape the agenda. Representatives of frontline communities whose survival is at stake will have little or no influence over the outcome. If it’s anything like the previous Copenhagen climate talks, they’ll even be physically shut out from the negotiations.

At New Internationalist we want to provide a platform for these grassroots and progressive voices. But as a small non-profit workers’ co-operative our funds are limited. So, we’re launching our first ever crowdfunding appeal to make this happen. Please check out our video, and pledge your support if you can.

What we want to do

We want to cover the real story – both from inside the climate talks and on the streets – reporting the voices and perspectives that the mainstream media usually ignore. We want to give Majority World voices more space to be heard. But we need support to make this happen.

With your help we’ll send Jess Worth and Danny Chivers (2 New Internationalist reporters) and Richard Roaf (our filmmaker) to the Paris negotiations to report from the frontline on the real story of what’s going on. You can follow our journey every day throughout the talks, and together we’ll:

  1. Provide a platform for marginalized voices: we’ll amplify frontline communities and other voices you don’t usually hear, through interviews, short films and articles that they would write for New Internationalist;

  2. Explain what’s really going on: while corporate lobbyists and media will shape the agenda, we’ll provide an alternative view by reporting from inside the talks and out on the streets, from the protests and grassroots activists;

  3. Create an alternative media hub: this online hub will bring together alternative, grassroots and progressive perspectives on the Paris negotiations, breaking news, and, if you can’t go to Paris yourself, inform you how to support the campaign for climate justice.

We know that the solutions to climate change are not going to come from inside the conference centre. They are going to come from the Indigenous people across North America who are stopping tar sands pipelines, and from the communities who are putting democratic renewable energy into practice across the world.

Working together, we can share these stories and others like them with a global audience and support Majority World campaigners and grassroots activists. We’ll challenge the rich governments’ narrative and, unlike Copenhagen, we’ll look beyond the Paris talks, inspired to build the powerful movement that we need to achieve climate justice.
