Not a great deal of good new writing on ‘Third World’ debt has emerged since the ground-breaking work of Susan George, whose last book on the topic was The Debt Boomerang (Pluto Press, London, with the Transnational Institute, Amsterdam, 1992). Perhaps the most important task now is to put debt in its wider context, and for this you can’t do much better than Michel Chossudovsky The Globalization of Poverty (Third World Network, Penang, Malaysia) which, though dense, is rewarding and packed with case studies. Also try Michael Rowbotham The Grip of Death (Jon Carpenter, Charlbury, 1998). Economic Justice Report is published four times a year by the Ecumenical Coalition for Economic Justice, 947 Queen St E, Ste 208, Toronto, ON M4M 1J9 – a carefully researched newsletter offering an alternative analysis of global economics.
