There is a vast, expanding growing library of academic and popular writing on green economics. A definite growth area (pardon the pun). This is a partial list of the most approachable and useful introductory texts. The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken (HarperCollins, New York, NY 1993) is justly revered as a classic. Written in an elegant yet conversational style with a mixture of penetrating analysis and common sense. For the Common Good by Herman Daly and John Cobb (Beacon Press, Boston, MA 1989) is an exhaustive, groundbreaking study and one of the most important books in the field. Part philosophy and part economics it is both visionary and practical. Wealth Beyond Measure: An Atlas of New Economics, (GAIA Books, London, Britain 1992) is a wide-ranging primer divided into readable bits and chock full of graphics. For green economics with a new-age twist try Barbara Brandt's Wholelife Economics: Revaluing Daily Life (New Society, Gabriola Island, BC, 1995). And the Worldwatch Institute's yearly State of the World report (Lester Brown et al, WW Norton, New York and London, yearly) on our progress towards a sustainable society is a reliable, colourful and sobering collection of data and analysis on major environmental trends.

There are also a handful of excellent magazines worth perusing if you want to keep up on green-economics issues on a regular basis. These four are worth a look:

Alternatives, c/o Environmental Studies, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON Canada N2L 3G1
In Context, PO Box 11470, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110, USA
Resurgence, Ford House, Hartland, Bideford, Devon EX39 6EE, Britain. Website www.gn.apc.org/resurgence/index.htm
Earth Island Journal, 300 Broadway, Ste 28, San Francisco, CA94133, USA
