The Short Century – Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa 1945-1994

August 2001

For independent Africa the 20th century lasted barely 50 years. Hence the title of this inspired and imaginative project which pulls together African film, visual art, photography, music, architecture, critical theory and liberation politics in one visually stunning and intellectually stimulating tome. The Short Century – Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa 1945-1994 edited by Okwui Enwezor is published by Prestel (ISBN 3-7913-2502-7). There are essays by the likes of Chinua Achebe and Chinweizu, and an appendix of writings by such liberation giants as Mandela and Lumumba. If you are interested in culture, history, politics or Africa, you’ll be interested in this.
