A visually dramatic and nuanced graphic history that brings to life the unvarnished truth behind Manchester’s infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

The politically provocative tale is told ‘verbatim’ style through the voices of those who were there. More than 15 people died and 700 were wounded by sabre-wielding troops at a peaceful pro-democracy rally.

The entire narrative is drawn exclusively from the direct testimony of the time, much of it newly unearthed by leading historian Professor Robert Poole. It includes letters, memoirs, journalist’s accounts, spies’ reports and courtroom evidence.

These have been carefully woven into a compelling narrative by editor Eva Schlunke, and combined with rich, vivid illustrations by professional cartoonist, illustrator and graphic novelist Polyp.

At a time when democracy is under siege the memory of Peterloo is all the more vital, and challenges the reader to ask what we have done with the legacy passed on by those who died.

Peterloo: Witnesses to a Massacre is a serious book with a passionate message. This excellent retelling of the brutal crushing of the 1819 protest that gave birth to the Guardian is told through the accounts of those who were there. Robert Poole and Eva Schlunke marshal the voices of workers, magistrates, cavalry officers and journalists, with illustrations by Paul ‘Polyp’ Fitzgerald. History rarely feels this immediate.
