What exactly are we talking about when we say ‘the Middle East’? This, and many other fundamental questions, are answered by Dan Smith in this latest edition of The State of the Middle East Atlas. The arenas of conflict are covered in judicious clarity. Smith uses straightforward chronology supported by accessible maps and graphics as the backbone to his analysis, while also giving careful consideration to gender relations, colonial impact, religion and global climate... In an ever more volatile Middle East, such nuanced analyses are invaluable. - Laura Cole, Geographical magazine.

An essential tool for understanding the Middle East and its pivotal role in global politics, this book lays bare the complexity of the region - its emergence from fallen empires, the shaping of its current contours by oil and outside intervention, the wave of change that broke in 2011, and the violence that has swept the region since.

With his customarily acute analysis Dan Smith uncovers the web of fault-lines that underlies the Middle East. Using maps and graphics, he demonstrates why recent events have occurred and why they have an impact on us all.
