Event Announcement: What does it mean to be an 'internationalist' today?

To celebrate its 40th birthday, New Internationalist magazine is delighted to be hosting an evening of debate and discussion on the subject 'What does it mean to be an internationalist today?'

Tickets are free, but places are limited - online registration for the event is open now, and e-tickets will be issued. Early booking is recommended.

The symposium will be co-chaired by Hannah Pool (journalist/author) and Hazel Healy of New Internationalist; panellists will include Lindsey Hilsum (Channel 4), John Hilary (War on Want), Jonathan Glennie (Overseas Development Institute), Marieme Jamme (Senegalese-born social entrepreneur), Dan Smith (International Alert), Asad Rehman (Climate campaigner, Friends of the Earth) and Jessica Horn (Africa Feminist Forum).

This will be a dynamic, semi-formal event, with short 5-minute presentations from panellists, an inter-panel discussion and questions from the floor. Complimentary cake and drinks will be served in celebration of New Internationalist's 40th birthday, and there will be an opportunity to meet the editors of the magazine and discover more about the people and the story behind this independent, outspoken publication.

'Much has changed since the heady optimism of the 1970s when our first magazine rolled off the press,' explained Hazel Healy, Co-Editor of New Internationalist magazine. 'As this is our 40th year we feel it's a good time to look at how attitudes to development and justice have evolved and changed. And with austerity beginning to bite in the West, it's also time for ideas about 'internationalism' and global solidarity to be restated forcefully and eloquently for a new era. We'd love people to come and join that discussion.'

The event will take place at Amnesty Human Rights Action Centre in central London on the evening of the 31 October 2013. Interested parties are invited to register to attend.

Tickets and a full programme are available online at newinternationalist.eventbrite.co.uk
