Support our journalism: buy from the Ethical Shop

The Ethical Shop helps us carry on doing what we love. James Rowland explains how

Buoyed up by the fantastic support shown by our 3,647 new investors the New Internationalist Co-operative is now redoubling its efforts to find new initiatives that will provide the money to both support the magazine, and also repay the trust of our investors.

One of the main ways in which we will try to do this is through the Ethical Shop.

Until a couple of years ago the shop was just called the New Internationalist Shop and mainly sold our One World Calendars and other annuals and books, such as the No Nonsense series, to magazine readers and other supporters.

The co-operative has a lot of expertise in this area as for some years we have managed the mail order and web shop operations for two large UK charities, Amnesty International and Friends of the Earth. A couple of years ago the co-op therefore decided that to increase the impact of the New Internationalist shop it would be better to re-badge it as the Ethical Shop.

This means that we can now sell to a much wider audience, all those seeking to buy Christmas cards and ethical products as Xmas gifts, and introduce a whole new group of people to New Internationalist.

At the same time we use the Ethical Shop to assist smaller NGOs, such as War on Want and 38 Degrees, by earning money when their supporters buy things from the shop.

We currently buy ethical goods (eg fairly traded, recycled, organic etc) from over 50 suppliers providing much needed employment to small organizations both here and in the Majority World.

So, this Winter please help support New Internationalist by buying your gifts and Christmas cards from the Ethical Shop. We have over 1,000 different lines to choose from – so something for everyone. In particular, look out for the fascinating range of novels (including graphic) from Myriad Editions who became part of New Internationalist earlier in 2017.

We also know that many of you have supported us for years, decades even, and this group of you might be particularly interested in The Kennedy Moment, a fascinating new thriller from Peter Adamson, who founded New Internationalist. This is soon to be published, so make sure you look out for it.

And, painful to say it, but now is also the time when we are looking for new things to sell next year, so please get in touch with any suggestions. The Co-op puts a huge amount of effort into running the Ethical Shop efficiently and we need to start planning for next year right now.
