The story behind the organic cotton:
Located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, more than 1,300 farming families are growing organic cotton. The project was established after a disastrous decade where the pesticide used on cotton bushes regularly cost more than the cotton that was harvested, driving families into debt. Learning new ways to counter the harmful insects and producing clean, organically grown cotton has brought major benefits. NI representatives have visited the project and we are proud to be associated with it.

The farmers are paid 25% above the normal market prices for cotton and some 60-odd tons of pesticide which would have been dumped on the land since the start of the project have not been used. Estimates suggest 20,000 people die each year from pesticide poisoning and a million more suffer acute poisoning. The chlorine bleach used in regular cotton manufacture is a hideous health hazard, releasing carcinogenics responsible for birth defects, low sperm count in men and numerous allergies. For the environment, for the farmers’ well-being and not least for your own health, buy these organic cotton products. The project is monitored by Greenpeace Belgium, in association with the New Internationalist, Amnesty International and OXFAM. Say NO to pesticides and help make trade fairer at the same time.
